Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia to Form Customs Union in 2008-2009

Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia are forming a full-fledged Customs Union within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Community (EvrAeEC).  This was announced by the general secretary of EvrAeEC Tair Mansurov at a press conference, reported Belta on April 21.  Mansurov said the Customs union will have a single customs territory, a single border, and a single customs tariff and is to be established in the 2008-2009 period.

In October of 2007, a plan of action on the Customs Union was developed, and the heads of state signed four documents. In the beginning of 2008, the country leaders signed an additional nine agreements. As specified by Belta, 13 international documents establishing the normative-rights basis of the union already exist.  “Active work of the three countries makes it possible to say that the formation of the Customs Union will be completed as scheduled,” said Tair Mansurov, reported the news source.
