AZERBAIJAN: No Compromise on Nagorno Karabakh Settlement, Say Most Azeris

On 13 March political analyst Rasim Musabekov made public the results of a sociological survey conducted in December 2006 among 1000 Azeri respondents in 15 regions and 12 cities of the country, reported Day.az the same day. According to the results of the survey, 59.4 percent of Azeri citizens said that they would not accept any kind of compromises in the resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh (NK) conflict. Only 11.5 percent of those polled agreed that NK should have cultural and local self-governance, while 9.5 percent said that the status granted to NK should be similar to that of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Meanwhile, only 38.4 percent of those surveyed believed that the peace negotiations will yield results, while the majority held the view that either the no war, no peace status quo will continue (46.7%) or the parties would resort to arms once again (12.7%).
Included in the 37 question survey was a question asking about the perceived friends and enemies of Azerbaijan, reported the news source. Among the friends, respondents mentioned Turkey (84.9%), Russia (17.8%), Georgia (9.3%), Ukraine (8%) and the United States (5.9%). The majority of the polled saw Armenia as their enemy (89%), then Russia (13.2%), France (10.8%) and Iran (9.7%).
