Kyrgyz Authorities Arrest Suspected Members of Outlawed Political Group

Kyrgyz police arrested two alleged members of Hizb ut-Tahrir, the radical Islamist political organization banned in Kyrgyzstan, and seized weapons and group-related literature, Interfax reported on 14 February, citing the Interior Ministry. Police in the country’s southern Osh region detained Kamil Ziynatulin, “from whom an F-1 hand grenade, a block of TNT, and 50 5.45-caliber Kalashnikov rounds were seized,” Interfax quoted the ministry press service as saying. "Investigators have established that Ziynatulin is a member of Hizb ut-Tahrir and was convicted of murder in the [Russian] city of Togliatti in 1994," the service said. "According to intelligence, [Ziynatulin] intended to sell the ammunition to an unidentified person who is a member of the terrorist Wahhabi movement," it said. Another alleged Hizb ut-Tahrir member, identified by authorities as A. Ergeshev, was arrested in the town of Kyzyl-Kiya, also in the country's south, the press service said. Officials also seized "six books, 32 pamphlets, 51 leaflets, four computer disks, and two notepads with inscriptions and charts showing contacts between Hizb ut-Tahrir members," according to the service.
