Kazakhstan Seeks to Elevate Status of its Servicemen

The Defense Ministry has prepared a set of new laws on the transformation and modernization of the armed forces of Kazakhstan.  The ministry head Danial Ahmetov laid out the plan to parliament in April 21, reported Khabar.  Ahmetov said changes were already under way after the main tenants of a new military doctrine were defined.  Responding to the concerned of deputies about the social welfare of servicemen in Kazakhstan, the defense minister said that the growth of the economy will enable Kazakh society to look at military service in a different light.  He said economic changes will bring not only higher salaries for men in uniform, but also a strengthened social safety net and better conditions for their families and children.
