Finance Minister: Armenia Could Become Medium-High Income Country in 2009

In 2009 Armenia may be listed in the category of medium-high income countries, Armenia’s Minister of Finance and Economy Vardan Khachatryan told journalists on January 24, reported Arka news agency.  The minister was cited as saying that this could be accomplished through its poverty reduction strategy.  Countries with GDP per capita between $1,611-3,611 are considered medium-low income countries; $3,600-11,000 – medium-high income countries and above $11,000 – high income countries.   According to preliminary statistics, Armenia’s economy registered 13.8 percent economic growth in 2007.  GDP per capita reached $2,848 in 2007, placing Armenia in the medium-low income country group for that year.
