Belarus to Modernize its Weapons Arsenal

Belarus is considering the acquisition of the new Russian anti-aircraft rocket system, the C-400 Triumph. This declaration was made by the head of the Military Industrial Committee of Belarus, Nicholai Azamatov in an interview to Belta, reported Telegraf news agency. Byelorussian interest was induced by successful experimental tests of the C-400, Azamatov was reported as saying. Azamatov added that export of the C-400 may begin as early as 2009, citing Russian sources.

Telegraf also reported that President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenka, at an assembly of the Military Industrial Committee this past November, disclosed that his administration is taking a course to modernize the country’s weapons “without massive purchases of new forms of military technology.” According to Lukashenka, his policy will spark industry and stimulate the work of military engineers.
