Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan has issued a confidential decree banning the use of the term “sozde”, (“alleged” or “so-called" in Turkish) when referring to the Armenian Genocide. Information about the directive was made public on July 19 by the Turkish Ulusal Kanal TV, reported Yerkir.
According to Erdogan’s decree, as reported by the news sources, the Armenian Genocide will now be described in official statements and public discourse as the “events of 1915” or “Armenian allegations regarding the events of 1915”. The decree was reportedly sent to all state institutions, including all ministries, local authorities, universities, courts, and the General Chief of Staff.
In his decree, Erdogan stated that this action was the result of a resolution adopted by the Council of Europe in February 2005, which called on Turkey to stop using certain disparaging words and phrases in reference to Armenians and Greeks in their textbooks, the news sources reported.
