Armenian Military Heading to Iraq, Skipping Afghanistan

The sixth rotation of Armenian peacekeepers performing their humanitarian mission in Iraq began on July 18, the defense minister’s spokesman, Colonel Seyran Shahsuvaryan, told Panarmenian.
The Armenian military have been contributing to stability in Iraq as part of the Polish division there since January 25, 2005. The preceding team of the Armenian peacekeeping contingent has been in Iraq since February 2. It included 46 members: two staff officers, three medical officers, 10 field engineers and 31 drivers.

Meanwhile, according to the Chief of the Armed Forces General Staff Colonel-General Seyran Ohanyan, there is still no decision on sending Armenian officers and physicians to Afghanistan, despite earlier announcements by the defense ministry, reported the news source.

According to Armenia’s Constitution, the issue of sending peacekeepers demands the signing of an appropriate agreement, as well as a special procedure in the Constitutional Court and the approval of Parliament.
