AZERBAIJAN: Poll: Only Small Fraction in Karabakh Would Accept Autonomy

On June 18, Aharon Adibekyan, the director of the Sociometer Center, released the results of a survey conducted among the population of Nagorno Karabakh, asking them questions about the different scenarios of settlement of the more than decade-long conflict, reported A1Plus information agency.

The majority of the polled (95%) believe that in the result of the peace settlement, Nagorno Karabakh should either become an independent state or join ranks with Armenia. Among the surveyed population, about 1.5 percent agreed to the settlement scenario where Nagorno Karabakh would receive broad autonomy within Azerbaijan. Eight percent of respondents believe that the “security zone”, which is comprised of seven Azeri territories adjacent to Nagorno Karabakh proper and is currently under the control of Karabakh forces, could be exchanged for independence, if necessary.
