Senior Official: Terrorist Threat Ongoing Concern in Kyrgyzstan

Deputy head of the Kyrgyz Security Council, Alik Orozov, told journalists on 17 May that terrorism is still a serious problem in his country, interfax.ru reported the same day. “The threat of heightened tensions in the republic, and the region as a whole, persists due to the presence of the Hizb-ut-Tahrir party, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and other extremist organizations operating in the Ferghana Valley,” Orozov said. He also did not exclude the possibility that Afghan and other foreign groupings may be operating in the region. Speaking about Hizb-ut-Tahrir, he said: “Today, it’s the most powerful party working in the region. It’s considerably more influential than official political organizations in Kyrgyzstan, and not only here.” (www.interfax-religion.ru, May 17)
