Yushchenko Mulls Using Chornobyl As Nuclear-Waste Dump

President Viktor Yushchenko said on 8 December he will consider the possibility of using the former Chornobyl nuclear plant as a dumping ground for spent nuclear fuel from abroad, Interfax and other media reported the same day. Ukraine should “study the political side of the matter,” he said, adding that “the economic expediency is evident." He stressed, however, that no such decision would be taken without thorough expert analysis and the Ukrainian public’s consent. “This is a long-term project which must first be approved by the people,” he said.
