What We Do
Washington Profile, the only Russian-language information agency based in Washington, D.C., provides timely analysis and news coverage of the United States to readers of the former Soviet Union and the Russian-speaking diaspora worldwide. We strive to eliminate cultural and historical misunderstandings by reporting objectively on the major issues and ideas that have shaped, and continue to shape, the United States. We seek to expose our readership to the diverse range of viewpoints that exemplifies America’s democratic process of open debate, raising awareness about the complexity of Americans’ perceptions of the world and themselves, as well as issues affecting relations between the U.S. and the countries of the former Soviet Union.
How We Do It
Washington Profile is a project of the World Security Institute, a non-profit organization committed to independent research and journalism on global affairs, and enjoys complete editorial control over content and coverage. Published two times weekly, our flagship electronic newsletter is available to anyone with an email account and access to the Internet. Additionally, Washington Profile makes special efforts to collaborate with media organizations operating in the former Soviet Union, which often lack the resources to maintain their own U.S.-based correspondents or acquire high-quality, impartial information from other commercial media outlets.
Who’s Reading Us
Since its inception in 2001, Washington Profile has been consistently ranked by Russian search engine Aport.ru as among the most frequently cited online Russian news source in North America (Check the current rankings HERE). Today, approximately 46,000 individuals and organizations from approximately 120 countries receive our email-based publication every week. Subscribers include scholars, analysts, economists, scientists, government officials and others interested in remaining abreast of U.S. current events. What’s more, as we have an online presence and some of the most popular media outlets in Russia and the former Soviet Union regularly reprint our material, Washington Profile is read weekly by tens of millions more across the region and around the world.

Testimonials
"I have been reading your issues frequently and with increasing interest. I wish to offer you my appreciation for taking on such a large and important task, and for being so thorough and objective. I must admit that when your first issues came out, I dismissed you as more Washington propaganda. I was distracted by your name and your appearance in the context of the crisis in Iraq. But now, after having systematically read subsequent issues, I am convinced of the bias-free nature of your publication, and that by no measure could you be considered a propaganda tool. I apologize for making hasty accusations."
--Lev Sigal, APN Observer
"Washington Profile is a great thing. For me and my colleagues, it is the main source for reliable, unbiased information, which we can't find in Belarus by any other means."
--Stanislav Shuskevich, former president of Belarus
"Many thanks for your newsletter, which I have received for quite some time. What separates your informational project from many others, it seems, is the exclusivity of the information. There is no such information anywhere else."
--Evgeniy Dyakonov, editor of Zona, an Uzbekistan-based human rights journal
